Storm Austen this weekend, with Storm Boelo already queuing up for next week.

Plan ahead, drive smart and get home safe. If the weather leaves you needing help, find out how to call us. How to request our help

Volunteer

Each year we receive more requests for assistance and as a result we are always looking for new volunteers to join the team.

Our primary focus

To preserve and protect human life and property by supplementing and supporting emergency services, statutory bodies and other organisations as deemed appropriate by the Trustees. In particular, but not exclusively, by providing drivers, 4x4 vehicles and other resources in adverse conditions or other times of need.

We operate mainly in the West Midlands area, but we often go where our clients need us. We are run entirely by volunteers.

Membership

Three ways to be part of the team

Responders and Controllers are our two levels of membership, and both are equally important to us. Supporters help from behind the scenes.

  • Responder

    Out on the road

    Apply to be a Responder

Use your own 4x4 or AWD vehicle, or other suitable transport, to help transport our clients.

    • Assist in adverse conditions and other times of need
    • Annual ROSPA driver and off-road training provided
    • Be available for deployments during the winter months
  • Controller

    Heart of the group

    Apply to be a Controller

Stay in the warm and dry while the Responders battle the elements and do the driving.

    • Control and dispatch from home on any PC or laptop, using our web-based control systems
    • Monitor Responders when out on call, including welfare checks to ensure their safety
    • Help assign jobs in our busiest periods
    • All training given, with full support from the Trustees and Leadership Teams
  • Supporter

    Behind the scenes

    Apply to be a Supporter

Help raise the funds and awareness that keep our vehicles on the road.

    • Support our fundraising and publicity events
    • Spread the word about our work
    • Help us reach more people who can support us

Before you apply

What we expect from our volunteers

Please make sure you have read and understood the points below before you complete the initial joining application form. Completing the application is not an automatic acceptance. The Trustees reserve the right to refuse an application, or terminate a membership, at any time without reason.

All applicants, Responders and Controllers

  • Read and accept the membership agreement
  • Be at least 18 years old
  • Be in general good health
  • Be reasonably physically fit (able to walk at least two miles within 60 minutes)
  • Have access to a mobile phone and a computer with an internet connection for group communications
  • Be able to attend meetings at least 3 times a year
  • Volunteer for at least three fundraising and marshalling events per year

Responders, once approved

As well as the above, you will be required to:

  • Complete a basic DBS check
  • Complete an annual ROSPA driver training and assessment (online, provided)
  • Complete an annual off-road driver training course (provided)
  • Complete a first aid course as required (provided)
  • Attend at least one training course per year (provided)
  • Display an authorised WM4x4R logo on your vehicle (provided)
  • Provide current MOT, insurance and tax details for your vehicle
  • Keep your vehicle roadworthy, and presentable inside and out at all times
  • Be available for deployments during the winter months
  • Maintain a clean driving licence (6 points maximum). Certain offence codes may preclude acceptance or continued membership
  • Provide driving licence check codes when requested
  • Be willing to attend call-outs (fuel expenses may not be paid for all jobs)
  • Own or have access to a minimum of an AWD vehicle

Failure to comply with any of the above could result in being suspended or removed from the charity.

Professional, but not a club

Despite us all being unpaid volunteers, we work alongside companies, event organisers, emergency services, and the general public. All of these require a professional and efficient approach by West Midlands 4x4 Response.

Finally, we are not a club. If you are looking for green lane tours, pay & play days, or trips away, this may not be the right organisation for you.
